How it works

How the cigar
scanner works.

Think of it as a cigar identifier in your pocket. No typing, no squinting at tiny print: one photo of the band is enough.

01

Hold it upright

Fit the whole cigar in the frame, head to foot, with the band facing you. One cigar per photo.

02

We read the band

Cigario zooms in on the band, reads it and matches the cigar. The brand’s story opens while it works.

03

Get the cigar card

Name, size, origin, strength, flavors and ratings from people who smoked it. Save it to your humidor in one tap.

Built by the community

Not in the catalog?
It is now.

Many scanners only recognise what is already in their database. When Cigario meets a cigar nobody has added yet, it still identifies it, makes a clean catalog photo and adds it for everyone. Every scan makes the catalog better.

Tips for a perfect scan

  1. 1Whole cigar, upright. Head to foot in the frame. The size is read from the shape, so do not crop it.
  2. 2Band facing you. Turn the cigar so the brand name on the band is readable.
  3. 3Soft, even light. Gold foil glares under a lamp. Daylight works best.
  4. 4One cigar at a time. Several cigars in one photo confuse any scanner.

Honest about what it can do

  • Reads the band on mainstream and boutique cigars, new releases too.
  • When two cigars look alike, it shows the closest matches and you pick.
  • No band, no scan. If the band is missing or unreadable, Cigario says so and you can add the cigar by hand.
  • It does not authenticate Cubans. For that, read how to spot fake Cuban cigars.

Questions?

Is there an app that can scan cigars?

Yes. Cigario is a free cigar scanner app for iPhone and Android. Photograph the cigar with the band facing the camera and it identifies the brand, line, size and origin, then shows strength, flavors and community ratings.

Is the Cigario cigar scanner free?

Yes. The app and the scanner are free to download and use. No card and no trial.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes, on both. Get Cigario from the App Store or Google Play.

How do I identify a cigar from a picture?

Open Cigario, tap Scan and fit the whole cigar upright in the frame with the band facing you. The answer appears in about six seconds.

What if my cigar is not in the catalog?

Cigario still identifies it, creates a clean catalog photo and adds it to the open catalog, so the next person who scans it gets the answer straight away.

Can it identify a cigar without the band?

Not reliably. The band is what identifies a cigar. Without one, Cigario tells you and you can add the cigar by hand.

Can the scanner tell if a Cuban cigar is fake?

No. It identifies the cigar, it does not authenticate it. Our guide on spotting fake Cuban cigars covers what to check.

What else does Cigario do?

A humidor for your collection, a tasting journal, and a map of cigar lounges and bars worldwide.
