Rocky Patel: Brand Story
Cigario editorial
From a Hollywood lawyer to one of the best-known brands in the world.
Brand history
Behind the Rocky Patel brand stands Rakesh "Rocky" Patel — a former Los Angeles attorney who turned his passion for cigars into one of the most successful modern brands. He launched the company in the late 1990s and, over two decades, built it into a global leader. It is perhaps the best proof that you can enter the cigar world "from the outside" — and still reach the very top.
Origins
Patel came to cigars by a roundabout route — as an attorney he handled entertainment-industry disputes in Los Angeles, and cigars were at first just a hobby. But passion eventually won out over the legal career: he left the profession and went to Central America to learn the craft directly from growers and master rollers.
History
After years of experimenting in search of the perfect blend, the breakthrough came with the Vintage 1990 and 1992 lines, named after the wrapper harvest year. The award-winning Decade line followed for the tenth anniversary, along with dozens more. Along the way Rocky Patel became one of the industry's best marketers, getting the brand into luxury clubs and cigar bars around the world.
How & where it's made
Rocky Patel cigars are made mainly in Honduras and Nicaragua, from tobacco grown across Central America. The brand is known for its ability to offer a wide range of profiles and price points — from affordable everyday cigars to limited top-tier lines. As a result, both a beginner and a demanding connoisseur can find something in the portfolio.
Style
On the palate Rocky Patel ranges from milder, cedar and nutty blends to full, spicy and earthy cigars with notes of coffee, cocoa and pepper. That very range is the brand's hallmark — under one name you'll find a cigar for a quiet morning and one for a demanding evening.
Did you know
Rocky Patel is famous for personally touring cigar nights around the world and meeting smokers face to face. Few brand owners are so visible among their own customers — and it has contributed a great deal to the brand's popularity.
