Hoyo de Monterrey: Brand Story
Cigario editorial
A Cuban classic from Vuelta Abajo and the robusto icon Epicure No. 2.
Brand history
Hoyo de Monterrey is one of the oldest Cuban brands, founded in 1865 by the grower José Gener. The name refers to a famous plantation in the heart of the Vuelta Abajo region. The brand is loved for its rather mild, aromatic character — and the robusto Epicure No. 2 is still a benchmark of the size.
Origins
José Gener owned one of the best tobacco farms in the Vuelta Abajo, and the word "hoyo" (hollow) refers to a particularly fertile low-lying strip by the river. From the start the brand built on the exceptional origin of its tobacco.
History
Over more than 150 years Hoyo became one of the pillar brands of Cuban production, famous for the elegant Le Hoyo series. Due to trademark, a Honduran Hoyo de Monterrey also exists for the US market, though it is fuller and quite different.
How & where it’s made
Cuban Hoyo is made in Cuba from Vuelta Abajo tobacco and is counted among the milder to medium Cubans. It is a great choice for calmer, daytime smoking.
Style
On the palate Hoyo is mild, aromatic and lightly sweet, with notes of cedar, hay, coffee and gentle spice. It is an ideal cigar for beginners and for anyone wanting to savour nuance.
