Romeo y Julieta

Havana for Churchill — a balanced classic named after Shakespeare.

Brand story

Romeo y Julieta is one of the best-known Cuban brands, founded in 1875 and named after Shakespeare’s tragedy. It was made famous by Winston Churchill, whose name a whole cigar format still carries. It is a balanced, approachable classic recognised even by non-smokers.

Origins

The brand was founded in 1875 and soon collected medals at world fairs — over time it reportedly had dozens of different bands. Its romantic name and elegant packaging made it one of the best-selling Havanas in history.

History

In the 20th century the brand became world-famous, not least thanks to Winston Churchill, who adored it — the famous Churchill format is named after him. Due to trademark, a Dominican Romeo y Julieta by Altadis also exists for the US market.

How & where it’s made

Cuban Romeo y Julieta is made in Cuba from Vuelta Abajo tobacco and is among the medium, exceptionally balanced Havanas. It offers a huge range of formats from cigarillos to large cigars.

Style

On the palate Romeo y Julieta is balanced and approachable, with notes of cedar, coffee, nuts and gentle spice. It is a great cigar for everyday enjoyment and as an entry into the world of Havanas.

Did you know

The Churchill format (a long, thick cigar) is named directly after Winston Churchill, and Romeo y Julieta is most closely tied to it. The Cuban version shows Juliet on her balcony on the band — a romantic symbol that has accompanied the brand since the 19th century.
